Summerween

Updated Aug 14, 2025

Celebrate Halloween early with these fun activities! A party is a great way to get together with your friends and make some lasting memories. We recommend having your celebration outdoors to enjoy the summer sun. Just remember to wear sunscreen. These activities are low-tech, apart from any music you put on and Movie Marathon, so we suggest asking your guests to leave their phones in a designated basket (unless they need them for medical or emergency reasons).

What are you waiting for? Grab an old costume, order some patches and don’t miss out on Summerween this year! Looking for some fun Halloween-themed crafts? Check out our Chills & Thrills blog article

Trick-Or-Treating Indoors

Looking for a fun way to trick-or-treat with your friends, but you live too far apart to walk to each other’s houses and make a mini trick-or-treat circuit? We have a solution! Get out your Halloween decorations, construction paper and tape, and decorate the doors in your house! Make some fake pumpkins to sit at the door with orange, black and green construction paper, using orange for the base, black for the “carvings,” and green for the stem. When decorating doors, ensure that every participant has their own door, so everyone has a “house” to visit. Then assemble the treats you’re handing out – if you’re looking for a healthy alternative to candy, we suggest our patches. Each “house” can have a different patch, so everyone can collect them all! Once you’re all set, put on your costumes and take turns going from door to door. We suggest having one kid trick-or-treat at a time so they can visit every door. Or, get parents involved by having them behind the doors while the children trick-or-treat.

Steps:

  1. Make some Halloween decorations (we suggest using coloured construction paper and pencil crayons).
  2. Decorate the doors in your house with these decorations.
  3. Assign all participants a door.
  4. Take turns going from door to door for trick-or-treating!

Costume Party

There’s no better way to celebrate Halloween than with a costume party! Host the party outside if you can, so everyone gets some fresh air. Decorate the party area with colourful lights, fake cobwebs, a snack table and fun board games. Then invite everyone over in costume! Try to include your friends who can’t wear costumes for religious reasons by organizing your costumes around theirs, such as a bunch of secret service agents protecting a high-profile celebrity. Have the friend who can’t wear costumes be the celebrity and wear their regular clothes. Together, you can play board games, old-school games such as zombie tag, and even bob for apples if you have the supplies! If you want more space for games, we suggest visiting your local park, especially if it has playground equipment that you can incorporate.

Movie Marathon

Find all your favourite Halloween movies and host a marathon with your friends! You can make some fun snacks, like pizza in the shape of a ghost, or pumpkin cupcakes. Why not have the dress code be spooky pyjamas or comfy costumes? If you’re wearing a costume, we recommend that you keep in mind you will be sitting for a few hours and choose a costume that is comfortable to wear. Watch old movies you love, or find some new movies! The scare factor is up to you, whether you go with a Frankenstein retelling, a Slasher film or something dark and twisted. Remember to ask your friends what they want to watch when deciding – you don’t want to accidentally give someone nightmares or ruin their experience.

Solve A Murder Mystery

Looking for a more engaging way to entertain older kids? Try a murder mystery! Find a kit online or write your own, giving everyone their own characters and roles to play. Together, they must ascertain the murderer, or pretend to be innocent, and win the game. There are many different types of murder mysteries, ranging from those where the murderer progressively eliminates other players to those where everyone is guilty except the detective. You could even use an old murder mystery novel as the framework for your story – just don’t expect your players to recreate the novel itself. Give them the role of each character and the premise from which the novel starts, then let them take it from there to create a whole new ending! For extra immersion, have your players come dressed like their characters.

Steps:

  1. Decide the basis of your story, whether it's an old mystery novel or an original concept.
  2. Assign your friends roles and ask them to dress as their characters.
  3. Everyone gathers at the chosen location to enact the mystery and solve the murder!

Alternatively, you can play a one-shot using your favourite Table Top Roleplaying Game! We suggest making your own module and having some predetermined characters for your players so you can get right to playing when everyone shows up. Why not have the players start the game with a bad case of amnesia, letting them learn about their characters as they progress? Or, bring back old characters from a past game as the undead, trying to find their way out of the crypt they’re buried in! The only limit is your imagination – you could even have your players fight an eldritch god.

Ghost Stories!

Gather everyone around the campfire to tell some ghost stories! Have everyone dress up in different costumes and prepare a ghost story that their character would tell. If someone is a zombie, they could tell the story about meeting the ghost of their past life. Or, a ghost could tell the story of how they came to be. Participants could also gather around for an extra scary story while someone dressed as a ghost waits for their cue to scare them! For the best ghost story experience, bring supplies to make s’mores and earn a s’more badge.

Potion Making Station (drinks)

Let’s be honest, we all tried to make potions out of random juices, soda pop and water during are childhood. Whether it resulted in swamp water or something completely inedible, it’s still a core memory. So, why not embrace it? There’s no better time to do so than at a Halloween-themed party! Set up a drink station with different juices, pop and syrups so everyone can make their own “potions.” You could even get potion-shaped glasses. Just remember, one kid will inevitably mix everything together, so maybe avoid adding chocolate syrup if the rest of your additives won’t pair well. And definitely do not add hot sauce!

Looking for a desert alternative? Try an ice cream station instead! You can get some fun, fancy toppings, such as sprinkles that look witchy, bowls shaped like cauldrons, and whipped cream dyed green with food colouring. Break out the chocolate syrup for this potion station – and maybe some cookies decorated to look like eyeballs or pumpkins. Candies can also be a great topper, such as candy bones, edible glitter, and spooky gummies. Your potion station doesn’t have to be spooky; you can have a pretty princess station made by good witches or fairies, who use sparkly, brightly coloured ingredients for their fun potions.

Please be cautious and double-check that none of your guests have any allergies when planning any food-related activity.
